Diversity Impact Even 2014
Frontier Nursing University (FNU) hosted its 4th Annual PRIDE Diversity Impact Event on the FNU campus in Hyden, Kentucky, June 6-8, 2014. This event was led by FNU President Susan Stone and Dean of Nursing Julie Marfell. Over 60 students, alumni, faculty and staff united for fellowship, networking, team building exercises, cultural awareness activities and discussions related to increasing diversity in nursing and midwifery. Attendance at this year’s event was the largest, along with Diversity Impact’s first male PRIDE student attendee. Education sessions were led by FNU faculty members and invited guests, and included a range of diversity topics that addressed obesity, health disparities, ageism, gender, family wellness, nutrition and physical fitness. The keynote session was led by Dr. Debra J. Barksdale, Associate Professor and Director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Attendees also enjoyed a special guest appearance by supermodel Christy Turlington-Burns, best known for representing Calvin Klein and working with brands including Maybelline Cosmetics and Versace. She is also the founder of Every Mother Counts, a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother.
