HYDEN, KENTUCKY - Frontier Nursing University (FNU), a graduate school of nursing and midwifery since 1939, hosted the 2014 commencement ceremony in Hyden, Ky., on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014. Over the past year, more than 500 nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners from almost every state across the nation completed an FNU distance-education program. The commencement ceremony was held in Hyden, Ky, the home of the historic FNU campus, to honor these graduates. More than 1000 guests attended the event.
Founded in Hyden, Ky, FNU has been educating nurses and midwives for 75 years; 2014 marks the 75th anniversary for the University. Started by nurse-midwifery pioneer Mary Breckinridge, FNU has grown into one of the country’s leading graduate schools of nursing and midwifery with an enrollment exceeding 1500.
FNU offers doctoral and master’s degrees for nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners. The university utilizes innovative distance-education methods, which were first adopted in 1989, to reach hundreds of nurses desiring nurse-midwifery and nurse practitioner education throughout the country and the world. FNU graduates provide primary care for women and families residing in all areas, with a focus on rural and underserved communities.
FNU President Susan Stone will presided over the commencement ceremony. Degrees were conferred on graduates of FNU’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program as well as Master of Science in Nursing candidates who completed the Nurse-Midwifery, Family Nurse Practitioner or Women's Health Care Nurse Practitioner specialty tracks.
Dr. Beverly Malone, the chief executive officer of the National League for Nursing (NLN), deliverred the commencement address.
